Saalumarada Thimmakka, also known as Aalada Marada Timakka has inspired me to become an SFE Ambassador. She is an Indian environmentalist from the state of Karnataka, who has single handedly planted and nurtured a woodland. Along four-kilometers between Hulikal and Kudur highway she has planted and nurtured around 384 banyan trees. She has also planted other 800 trees.
Thimmakka was born in Gubbi Taluk, Tumakuru District in Karnataka. She received no formal education and worked as a casual laborer in a nearby quarry. She could not have children. So she was depressed and wanted to commit suicide, but with the support of her husband, she started planting trees. The word Saalumarada means row of trees in 'Kannada language'.She is so referred because of her work.
For her noble act she has been conferred with various awards. Recently she has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri Award.
I am inspired by her affection towards nature. She planted trees selflessly and is 107yrs old!! She is an epitome of perseverance and determination. She is a mother not just to 384 banyan trees but to all the people and wildlife who are benefited from her noble act!!
